TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe head of Jakarta’s gubernatorial transition team, Ima Mahdiah, said her team never proposed a 4-day work per week policy, claiming it was a personnel view of an urban planning expert, Nirwono Joga. The idea was divulged during a discussion with the PDIP (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle) faction at Jakarta’s regional representative council (DPRD).

“We never talk or propose anything about a 4-day work week policy,” said Ima, the head of Governor-elect Pramono Anung and his deputy governor Rano Karno’s transition team, in a written statement on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

According to Ima, the proposal should be understood as an academic suggestion to be considered by the DPRD and the Jakarta Provincial Government.

The transition team, she said, serves a more specific agenda, namely ensuring the government transition runs smoothly and preparing priority programs to be executed by Pramono Anung and Rano Karno immediately upon inauguration as Jakarta's new leaders.

“Our priority programs cover urgent issues, such as flood management, public transportation, and improving the quality of public services,” she said.

Ima was nevertheless appreciative of Nirwono’s 4-day work week proposal, which he said has been implemented in several developed countries to improve people's mental health and productivity.

The idea could be subject to further in-depth discussion between the DPRD and the local government going forward, she said, albeit admitting that it was not part of the main agenda to consider by Pramono’s team.

“I consider the suggestion worth discussing further by stakeholders, but of course, it will require a comprehensive review and consideration of the context of Jakarta,” said Ima, adding that she hopes the people of Jakarta will no longer misunderstand the issue.

She stressed that the transition team of Pramono Anung and Rano Karno will remain focused on strategic agendas that are in line with the future government.
