TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tanjung Priok Class I Maritime Meteorology Station has issued an early warning of tidal flooding, effective from December 26, 2024, to January 3, 2025. This warning highlights the potential for increased sea levels to cause flooding along the Jakarta coastline.
In response to this warning, Isnawa Adji, Head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), urged coastal communities to remain vigilant against the risk of tidal flooding. He noted that this phenomenon coincides with the new moon phase, which significantly increases the likelihood of maximum sea tides.
“This maximum sea tide phenomenon, occurring concurrently with the new moon phase, has the potential to trigger coastal flooding or tidal inundation in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta,” Isnawa said in an official statement released on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Despite the early warning, Isnawa reported no instances of displacement due to flooding as of yesterday. He further emphasized ongoing coordination with the Jakarta Water Resources Agency to address the potential impacts of these tidal conditions.
“We are deploying personnel to monitor flood conditions in each affected area. This approach shows our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Jakarta's residents,” Isnawa said.
Tidal flooding is a phenomenon characterized by the inundation of land by seawater, typically occurring in coastal regions due to rising sea levels. This phenomenon can cause damage to infrastructure, disrupt economic activities, and pose significant health risks to affected communities.
