TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared 2,100 cleaning officers to handle the 2025 New Year's waste. Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency Asep Kuswanto said the officers will work in three shifts alternately.
"A total of 2,100 officers are on standby in strategic areas such as Monas (National Monument), Bundaran HI (Hotel Indonesia Roundabout), and along Jalan Thamrin-Sudirman. The rest are placed in five administrative areas of Jakarta and the Seribu Islands, supported by 68 typer trucks, 53 road sweepers, and 27 cross-cars," said Asep in his written statement, Saturday, December 28, 2024.
Asep estimates that the afternoon to evening will be the peak time for community activity at the end of this year. Garbage collection will be carried out immediately, so that it does not wait to pile up until the next day.
In addition to deploying officers, Asep asked the public to participate in maintaining cleanliness. The public is advised to dispose of garbage in its place, bring their own drinking containers and reduce the use of single-use plastic. "Our cooperation is very important so that this holiday season remains low on waste," he said.
The Environmental Agency will provide temporary waste bin facilities in a number of strategic crowded locations to make it easier for people to dispose of waste. All officers who are deployed are certain to be ready to handle the potential spike in waste on New Year's Eve.
Previously, Acting Governor of Jakarta Teguh Setyabudi estimated that on New Year's Eve 2025 there would be a spike in waste of up to 150 tons. This figure has increased from the previous year which was only 130 tons, this increase is because the crowded areas in Jakarta have increased.
"In addition, the potential for rain on New Year's Eve is also expected to increase the weight of the waste produced," Teguh told Tempo via a written message, Friday, December 27, 2024.
For waste management, the Jakarta Environmental Agency follows the direction of the Minister of Environment based on Circular Letter Number 1 of 2024 concerning Control of Waste for Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 Celebrations. The letter regulates strategic steps that must be taken by local governments in waste management during the holiday season.
