TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Governor of Jakarta Teguh Setyabudi estimates that on New Year's Eve, additional waste in Jakarta will reach 150 tons. According to him, this prediction increased compared to the previous year, which was 130 tons, due to the increase of New Year celebration crowd points in various areas of Jakarta.
"In addition, the potential for rain on New Year's Eve is also expected to increase the weight of the waste produced," Teguh told Tempo in a written message, on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Data from the Ministry of Environment states that the amount of waste in Jakarta reaches 7,500 tons per day. According to Teguh, the Jakarta Environmental Agency has prepared a careful handling strategy to ensure cleanliness is maintained during the Christmas and New Year holidays, one of which is dividing cleaners into four shifts that run non-stop.
The shift with the largest number of personnel is from afternoon to night when public activity is at its peak. "This activity begins with a consignment apple in each Administrative City Environmental Sub-agency to check the readiness of officers before starting work," he said.
On New Year's Eve, according to Teguh, Jakarta Environmental Agency deployed 3,900 cleaning personnel, with 2,100 officers deployed in strategic areas such as Monas, HI Roundabout, and Thamrin-Sudirman Street.
For the Monas area, Teguh said 29 inorganic trucks, 5 cross cars, and thousands of plastic bags will be deployed to ensure the area remains clean during and after the New Year's Eve celebration. "Thousands of other officers will be distributed to the five administrative regions of Jakarta as well as the Thousand Islands," he said.
Previously, the Jakarta Environmental Agency has followed the direction of the Minister of Environment who has issued Circular Letter Number 01 of 2024 concerning Waste Control for Christmas Celebration 2024 and New Year 2025. This circular letter regulates the strategic steps to be taken by local governments in waste management during the holiday season.
