TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan's Sakura or cherry blossom season is always eagerly awaited by tourists, but unfortunately the pink blooming phenomenon is short-lived. Luckily, the weather experts at Weather News have detailed predictions for the entire country's cherry blossom season in spring 2025. So, travelers can plan their trips early so they don't miss out.
Reported by Sora News 24, Weather News forecasters predict that the cherry blossoms will bloom first in Tokyo. The first cherry blossoms are expected to bloom on March 21, three days earlier than usual.
After the nation's capital, the next places, based on current forecasts, are the cities of Yokohama and Kochi one day later, on March 22. The timing is also three days earlier than the average for Yokohama, but right on the annual average date for Kochi.
Earlier Cherry Blossom Season
While the average is close to the cherry blossom start time, these dates are generally later than last year's initial forecast. In recent months, Japan has experienced a warmer than usual autumn and a mild winter so far. Cherry blossoms don’t bloom until the weather warms up in spring, and they need cool temperatures to thrive.
After cherry trees shed their leaves in the fall, they go into a dormant state to sustain themselves for the next few months. Only after winter actually sets in do the trees start to produce flower buds that will bloom in the spring.
As such, Weather News is predicting a slight delay in cherry blossoms in parts of the southern Kinki region, which includes Mie, Shiga, Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo prefectures in central Japan and the southwestern island of Kyushu. Both regions experienced a slightly warmer winter this year.
However, most current forecasts are for cherry blossom season to arrive closer to the average date for most of eastern and western Japan. Blossoms will begin earlier than usual in the northeastern Tohoku region due to warmer temperatures, which are expected to occur in April.
Please note that cherry blossoms are fickle flowers and predicting bloom dates is not an exact science, so this is just a preliminary Weather News prediction. There will usually be updates as we get closer to spring. Cherry blossoms also take a little while, usually between half a week to a full week, to go from bloom to full bloom.
However, cherry blossom season is something you should not miss while in Japan. This forecast can be a good starting point for planning your visit to Japan.

- Aomori: April 18 (4 days earlier than average)
- Hiroshima: March 23 (2 days earlier than average)
- Kagoshima: March 28 (2 days later than average)
- Kanazawa: April 2 (1 day later than average)
- Kochi: March 22 (same as average)
- Kushiro: May 8 (8 days earlier than average)
- Nagano: April 8 (3 days earlier than average)
- Nagoya: March 24 (same as average)
- Niigata: April 7 (1 day earlier than average)
- Osaka: March 26 (1 day earlier than average)
- Sapporo: April 24 (8 days earlier than average)
- Sendai: April 4 (4 days earlier than average)
- Tokyo: 21 March (3 days earlier than average)
- Yokohama: March 22 (3 days earlier than average)
