TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vatican on Saturday, February 22, 2025, announced that the health condition of Pope Francis has deteriorated in the past 24 hours. For the first time, the Vatican described the condition of 88-year-old Pope Francis as critical, requiring supplemental oxygen and blood transfusions.

In the announcement, it was also stated that Pope Francis would not be able to appear in public for Sunday, February 23, 2025, to lead the mass. This marks the second consecutive Sunday that the Pope will be unable to lead the mass for health reasons. It is also the first time in two weeks that Pope Francis has been unable to lead the congregation in the mass.

Pope Francis was taken to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, after experiencing shortness of breath for several days. He was then diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

The statement issued on Saturday evening, February 22, 2025, mentioned the long-standing asthma of the Pope, which has recurred and required oxygen assistance. The statement at that time read: "The health condition of the Pope is still critical, but not life-threatening."

The statement also explained that Pope Francis is still conscious and able to sit up. However, his condition is more severe than before, requiring additional oxygen and blood transfusion, as the test results showed that his platelet count is still low.

The Vatican described Pope Francis as having double pneumonia, a serious respiratory infection that can damage both of his lungs, making it difficult for him to breathe. Reuters reported that the infection suffered by the Argentine Pope is very complex and caused by two or more micro-organisms.

In recent years, Pope Francis has undergone medical treatment several times, including abdominal surgery in 2023. Due to his declining health condition in recent weeks, he has requested his assistants to read speeches and messages on his behalf.
