Japanese Embassy Offers Scholarships for Indonesian Teachers

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Japanese Embassy in Indonesia on December 24, 2024, launched a scholarship program for Indonesian teachers to pursue studies at Japanese universities. Selected applicants will receive training in various aspects of teaching, including effective instructional methods, curriculum development, and other essential skills to enhance their teaching abilities and improve the quality of education.

This non-degree program will run for one year and six months, starting in September/October 2025 and concluding in March 2027. Selected participants will receive round-trip airfare from Indonesia to Japan, university entrance fees, and tuition or training fees fully funded by the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho). Additionally, participants will receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses during their stay in Japan.

Eligibility criteria for this scholarship include Indonesian citizenship, age 34 years or younger as of April 1, 2025, currently employed as a teacher in a recognized school or formal educational institution, minimum of 5 years and 0 months of cumulative teaching experience as of October 1, 2025.

Upon completion of the program, participants are obligated to return to Indonesia and continue their careers as educators.

Detailed information regarding requirements, application procedures, and necessary documents can be found on the official website of the Embassy of Japan. The application deadline is January 22, 2025.

Prior to this announcement, Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi expressed optimism about the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between Japan and Indonesia under the leadership of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. 

He emphasized that President Prabowo possesses a strong commitment to fostering closer ties with Japan. Ambassador Masaki stated that he had discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including defense and security, with President Prabowo, while also underscoring the importance of maritime cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan were formally established in April 1958. This year marks the 66th anniversary of this significant bilateral partnership. 

In October 2024, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conveyed his desire to further strengthen cooperation between the two nations to President Prabowo. President Prabowo reciprocated this sentiment, expressing his interest in enhancing relations with Japan in various sectors, including the economy, defense, and security.
