TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the Jeju Air plane crash with flight number 7C2216 has increased to 171 people. The plane on Sunday, December 29, 2024, failed to land and crashed into a wall at Muan International Airport. At the time of the incident, there were a total of 181 passengers and crew on the plane.

The investigation team is evaluating the possibility of a bird as the cause of the plane crash, or that the incident was caused by weather factors. Yonhap news agency reported that a bird was likely the cause of the plane's wheels failing to come out. Authorities are still searching for possible body parts of victims in the area where the plane hit the wall and exploded.

Several hours after the plane crash occurred, family members of the victims gathered in the Muan International Airport area. Some were crying and hugging each other to strengthen each other. Volunteers from the Red Cross distributed blankets to the families of the victims.

The families of the victims screamed and cried as the medical team announced the names of the 22 first-stage victims who had been identified by their fingerprints. Forms were distributed to family members of the victims so that they could be contacted further.

There was a family member of the victim standing near the loudspeaker to ask for more information from the authorities. “My brother died and I don’t know what happened. I don’t know anything,” a relative of a victim said.

Jeju Air 7C2216 was a twin-engine Boeing 737-800. Video footage showed the plane taxiing along the runway with its wheels down, then hitting an airport wall and exploding into a mass of debris. Photos showed smoke billowing into the sky and debris scattered around.

Two crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued from the tail section of the plane. Muan International Airport fire chief Lee Jung-hyun said the fire was extinguished by 1 p.m. The official cause of the crash has not been released.
