TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A legal expert from Indonesia's Mulawarman University, Herdiansyah Hamzah, said former President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s nomination for the most corrupt figure of 2024 by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is unsurprising, given his track record.
“It’s not surprising, given his track record. We all know how weak the corruption eradication was under his leadership. This nomination was confirmed through Jokowi’s political decisions,” he told Tempo on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
OCCRP, he said, was indeed an institution that relies on opinions from journalists and its global network. Therefore, he said, Jokowi’s nomination was processed through analysis that went beyond criminal cases.
“It was more about Jokowi’s government’s failure to maintain the rhythm of corruption eradication spirit in Indonesia,” he said.
He alluded to how the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had been dulled under Jokowi’s regime. KPK’s leadership was also quite problematic during the former head of state’s reign, as many corruption cases were unsolved.
Jokowi’s nomination was also assessed through the decline of democracy under his leadership, due to the elite’s desire to build a political dynasty. Jokowi, he said, also co-opted judiciary institutions like the Constitutional Court to pave the way.
“That is the problem. Not to mention, for example, when Jokowi talks about extending his presidential term for a third one, postponing elections, and extending the term of office,” said Herdiansyah.
These reasonings, he went on, highlighted Jokowi’s name for the nomination of the most corrupt regime in the world.
Previously, OCCRP announced that Jokowi was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2024 Organized Crime and Corruption figure.
This recognition places Jokowi among five other prominent individuals who were selected through a global nomination process. The other finalists include Kenyan President William Ruto, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina, and Indian businessman Gautam Adani.
“We asked for nominations from readers, journalists, the Person of the Year judges, and others in the OCCRP global network,” stated the OCCRP on its official website on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
