TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia) said it is following up on Iran’s positive response regarding efforts to release two Pertamina oil tankers that remain stuck in the Persian Gulf amid tensions linked to the US–Israel and Iran conflict.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said Indonesia is coordinating closely with all relevant parties, including Iran’s Armed Forces and Foreign Ministry, to follow up on signals of cooperation from Tehran.

“The Indonesian Foreign Ministry continues to coordinate intensively with all parties, including the Iranian Armed Forces and the Iranian Foreign Ministry, to follow up on the positive signal conveyed by the Iranian government regarding the Pertamina vessels,” he said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

He added that Indonesia is monitoring the condition of both tankers and ensuring technical readiness so they can sail once clearance is granted. This includes crew preparedness and insurance arrangements.

Nabyl also stressed Indonesia’s position on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz safe, open, and accessible for international shipping in line with international law.

Indonesia, he said, rejects any threats against commercial vessels and emphasizes that the safety of seafarers must remain the highest priority for all parties, especially during conflicts.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said that issues related to overflight clearance requested by the United States to pass through Indonesian airspace have had no impact on ongoing negotiations with Iran.

“The process is ongoing, and we are waiting for further details on the mechanism from the Iranian side,” she said.

In March, the Foreign Ministry confirmed that Iran had responded positively to Indonesia’s request to allow the two stranded Pertamina tankers to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

“There has been a positive response from the Iranian side,” Nabyl said earlier, following intensive coordination with relevant parties.

According to vessel-tracking site Vessel Finder, both tankers remain in the Persian Gulf. The Pertamina Pride is located off Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, while the Gamsunoro is positioned off Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
