Korean Singer Jae Park Shows Solidarity Over Ojol Driver's Death in Jakarta Protest

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean musician Jae Park, known as eaJ, has spoken out about Indonesia’s current political situation, particularly the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver who was run over by a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Regional Police during a protest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, August 28, 2025

The former member of the Korean rock band DAY6 questioned the state of democracy in Indonesia after witnessing how security forces handled the protests, which resulted in fatalities.

eaJ reposted a video showing the moment a Brimob barracuda vehicle fatally struck Affan Kurniawan near the Bendungan Hilir II flats in Pejompongan.

“Is a democracy really democratic if citizens are martyred for exercising their right to protest?” eaJ wrote on X, Friday, August 29, 2025.

In light of the tense situation in Jakarta, eaJ decided to postpone the ticket sales for his upcoming concert. Originally scheduled to open on Friday, August 29, ticket sales for “The 1/9 Tour” in Jakarta have been pushed back to Monday, September 1, 2025.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the current situation. Out of respect for our country and its people, we have decided to postpone today's / ticket sales,” eaJ announced via Instagram.

Rajawali Indonesia, the concert promoter, confirmed the rescheduling. eaJ’s Jakarta concert will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the GBK Senayan Basketball Hall.

“In respect of the current situation in Indonesia, the ticket sales have been rescheduled. This pause is a moment for us to reflect on what truly matters: solidarity and humanity,” Rajawali Indonesia wrote on Instagram.

The decision was warmly received by Indonesian fans, many of whom thanked eaJ for showing empathy and solidarity.

“Thanks, bro, for retweeting this. Hopefully, international media will notice the corruption of the Indonesian government,” one user, @youhapp***, commented. Another, @kucingg***, wrote: “Thank you for always using your big platform to amplify the voices of the oppressed, Jae. I really appreciate it.” Meanwhile, @eajeri*** added: “Thank you for always paying attention to us. It means so much as we fight for our rights and our future here. To friends in Indonesia, please stay safe.”

Not the First Time eaJ Spoke on Indonesia’s Politics

This is not the first time eaJ has spoken up about Indonesia’s political climate. In August 2024, he urged Indonesians to monitor the Constitutional Court’s decision on the Regional Election Law (UU Pilkada) and to safeguard democracy. He also shared an “Emergency Warning” post featuring the Garuda Pancasila emblem on social media.

In March 2025, eaJ posted a message of support for Indonesians following the passage of the controversial Military Bill (RUU TNI).

Beyond Indonesian politics, eaJ has consistently used his platform to advocate for global issues. At the Prambanan Jazz Festival on July 4, 2025, he closed his performance with a message of solidarity, calling out: “Free Palestine.”
