TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has seized a plot of land and a residential house in Depok, West Java, allegedly owned by former Bengkulu Governor Rohidin Mersyah (2021-2024), who is a suspect in an extortion and bribery case. The anti-graft commission also confiscated three additional land plots in Bengkulu linked to Rohidin.
“The investigation is focused on alleged extortion and receipt of gratuities by the suspect RM,” KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto said in a statement on Tuesday, February 25.
Tessa stated that the assets were seized on Friday, February 21, as part of efforts to recover state losses resulting from Rohidin’s alleged crimes. The total value of the four seized properties is estimated at Rp4.3 billion.
Investigators are still tracing and verifying various assets linked to the former governor that may have been registered under different people or names, or controlled by third parties. The antigraft body also plans to apply money laundering charges against individuals found to have intentionally concealed assets acquired through corruption.
Rohidin was arrested in a KPK sting operation (OTT) on the night of Saturday, November 23, 2024. He is suspected of instructing subordinates to allocate funds from Bengkulu’s Regional Budget (APBD) to finance his reelection campaign in the 2024 local elections. The operation resulted in the confiscation of approximately Rp7 billion in various currencies.
The KPK has named three suspects in this corruption case, which involves government officials who allegedly abused their positions or engaged in actions contrary to their duties between 2018 and 2024. Out of the eight individuals apprehended during the sting, only three were formally named suspects.
“As stipulated in Article 12B, the suspects in the extortion case are state officials, while others were those coerced into compliance,” KPK Deputy chairman Alexander Marwata stated during a press conference at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in South Jakarta on Sunday night, November 24, 2024.
