TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A landslide occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 13, 2025, burying four residents of the Tiban Koperasi housing complex in Batam City, Riau Islands. The hill behind the neighborhood collapsed due to prolonged rain over the past three days.
Until Monday afternoon, only two landslide victims had been found. Officers are still searching for the other two victims, Doni Aprianto and Linda Luciana, a couple who resided in house number 29A at Block 2 of the complex.
Officers had deployed several excavators to search for the two victims.
The governor of Riau Islands, Ansar Ahmar, said the government is looking into mitigation measures to prevent similar landslides from happening in the future.
Referring to data collected by Tempo at the location, there were at least 5 houses affected by the landslide. In total, the five houses were inhabited by 17 people.
According to Ansar, landslide mitigation is urgent because many people live around the hillside. “Something similar happened in the past in Serasan (Riau Islands), where 21 people died,” he said.
Ansar raised the importance of public awareness about the impact of extreme weather. He also warned that bad weather could trigger landslides and floods in the Riau Islands over the next few days.
