TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2025 was held at the Lusail International Circuit, Doha, Qatar. The competition took place from February 8 to 12, 2025. Several Indonesian campuses, such as the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), University of Malang (UM), and Diponegoro University (Undip), received awards during the competition.
The Shell Eco-marathon is a competition that can be participated in by high school and university teams to create energy efficiency engineering programs. They are challenged to sharpen the aspects of design and technology within the skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to find solutions for the future.
List of Campuses in Indonesia that Achieved Success in SEM
1. Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS)
The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology team, also known as ITS Antasena, participated and achieved remarkable success in the competition. They won four awards, with one on-track and three off-track awards in the competition.
The on-track award was received after their designed car recorded a fuel efficiency of 314 km per liter. Quoted from the ITS page, thanks to this remarkable achievement, they achieved third place in the Prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell category in the on-track section.
They also received off-track awards, namely first place in the Vehicle Design Award Prototype Category, second place in the Communication Award, and the Place Carbon Footprint Reduction Award.
2. University of Malang (UM)
The UM Semeru Team successfully received the Prototype Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) category award in the competition. The Semeru Team's car innovated on vehicle body materials made of carbon fiber, rigid aluminum frames, real-time data-based telemetry systems, low rolling resistance tires, and optimized ethanol-fueled engines for vehicle efficiency.
The vehicle weighs only 43 kg, making it one of the most efficient vehicles in its category. This car also achieved outstanding performance by using only 1.083 km/liter of fuel.
3. Diponegoro University (Undip)
Diponegoro University, or Undip, also achieved outstanding results in SEM 2025. The Antawirya Undip team successfully achieved 3 important awards. They won 1st place in the Prototype Battery Electric/ Electric Vehicle (EV) category after successfully recording a performance of 835 km/kWh.
Quoted from the Undip page, they also won 2nd place in the Urban Concept Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) category with a fuel efficiency of 415 km/liter. They even received an off-track award in the Technical Innovation category, 'Manumatic Dog Clutch: Optimization of the Transmission System in Rondhan Electric Vehicle to Reduce Drag Losses and Improve Power Efficiency'.
