List of Plane Crashes Across Indonesia in Last Five Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An ATR 42-500 aircraft owned by Indonesia Air Transport was reported missing during a Makassar-bound flight from Yogyakarta on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

PT Indonesia Air Transport CEO Tri Adi Wibowo said there were seven crew members on board the aircraft, with three passengers.

Rescuers swiftly conducted a search mission, suspecting the aircraft had crashed. The next morning, rescuers found the wreckage of the aircraft on the slopes of Bulusaraung Peak, South Sulawesi. 

This incident marked the first plane crash this year for Indonesia, but it's another tragedy added to a long list of domestic air traffic accidents over the years.

Tempo has listed 10 incidents where an aircraft crashed in the past five years across Indonesia, below:

1. Quicksilver GT500 aircraft (Bogor, 2025)

A Microlight Fixedwing Quicksilver GT500 trainer aircraft with registration PK-S126 owned by the Indonesian Aero Sport Federation (FASI) crashed in Ciampea, Bogor Regency, on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

This incident killed Air Commodore Fajar Adriyanto.

At around 09:19 a.m. local time, the aircraft lost contact and was found downed near the Astana Cemetery. Both crew members were immediately evacuated to a hospital, but Air Commodore Fajar was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Nyoman said that the flight was part of routine capacity training for FASI members, the national aerospace sports organization under the guidance of the Indonesian Air Force.

2. Tecnam P2006T aircraft (South Tangerang, 2024)

Three people were killed after a Tecnam P2006T aircraft with registration PK-IFP crashed near Sunburst Field, BSD City, Serpong, South Tangerang, on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

The three victims were members of an Indonesian aviation association, with the pilot named Captain Pulu Darmawan, co-pilot Captain Suanda, and engineer named Farid Ahmad.

The Ministry of Transportation said the plane crashed at 1:50 p.m. local time while flying from Tanjung Lesung Airport in Banten to Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang.

An eyewitness, Ali, 65, said a loud bang was heard on Jalan BSD Grand Boulevard, Cilenggang, South Tangerang City, when the plane crashed. “It sounded like a car crash. Boom! But it didn't explode. There was no explosion,” he said.

3. Smart Air (Nunukan, 2024)

The Pilatus PC-6 Porter PK-SNE aircraft owned by Smart Aviation was reported missing after a loss of contact on Friday morning, March 8, 2024, after taking off from Juwata Tarakan International Airport at 08:25 a.m. local time, bound for Binuang, Krayan, Nunukan at 09:25 a.m.

A pilot, M Yusuf, and one engineer on board (EOB) named Deni S. were onboard. The aircraft was carrying cargo with a total weight of 583 kilograms of basic necessities.

Rescuers found the pilot, Capt. M Yusuf, safe on Sunday afternoon, March 10, 2024, but the aircraft mechanic was found dead.

“The pilot survived, while the mechanic died,” said Ba Binuang Village Head Kalvin Daud Ipid when contacted from Tarakan on Sunday.

4. Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano Aircraft (Pasuruan, 2023)

An Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano aircraft crashed in the Watugede area, Keduwung Village, Puspo District, Pasuruan, East Java, on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

Indonesian Air Force Information Service Chief Air Commodore R. Agung Sasongkojati said there were thick clouds before the two aircraft crashed.

According to Agung, the EMB 314 Super Tucano aircraft was carrying out a formation flight proficiency mission and took off from Air Squadron 21 at Abdulrachman Saleh Air Base in Malang, East Java, at 10:51 a.m. local time.

The crash of the EMB 314 Super Tucano aircraft TT-3103 and TT-3111 resulted in the deaths of four crew members during this flight mission.

The Super Tucano TT-3111 aircraft was piloted by Lt. Col. Sandhra Gunawan and Col. Widiono. Meanwhile, the Super Tucano TT-3103 was piloted by Maj. Yuda Anggara Seta and Col. Subhan.

5. SAM Air Aircraft (Yalimo, 2023)

An aircraft owned by PT Semuwa Aviasi Mandiri or SAM Air lost contact in Papua Province on Friday, June 23, 2023. The wreckage was found about 12 kilometers from Elelim Airport, Yalimo Regency, Papua Province.

The SAM Air aircraft reportedly took off from Elelim Airport, Yalimo Regency, Papua Highlands Province on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 11:10 a.m. local time. The aircraft was supposed to have landed in Poik District, but by 12:20 p.m., the Cessna 208 Caravan 675 PK-SMW aircraft had not arrived.

The aircraft was piloted by Hari Permadi and co-pilot Levi Murib, with four passengers on board. The aircraft crew and passengers died in the incident.

“The plane crashed 12 kilometers from Elelim Airport in the direction of Poik, Walarek District, Yalimo Regency,” said Senior Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, as quoted by Tempo on Friday, June 23, 2023.

6. PT Angkasa Super Services Aircraft (Morowali, 2023)

An aircraft owned by PT Angkasa Super Services, a Hawker 900 XP with registration PK-LRU, crashed at Maleo Airport, Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday afternoon, May 11, 2023, at around 2:59 p.m. local time.

Rosedi, Secretary of AirNav Indonesia, stated that the aircraft landed at high speed, causing it to veer off the runway. As a result, the aircraft sustained damage.

The aircraft skidded approximately 200 meters from the end of runway 05.

The aircraft was carrying four crew members and four foreign passengers from PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI). The aircraft was also chartered to transport the CEO of the nickel company operating in North Morowali Regency.

“There were no fatalities; the total number of people on board was eight. The evacuation process was carried out by airport personnel,” he said.

7. PT Reven Global Air Transport aircraft (Puncak Regency, 2022)

A cargo aircraft owned by PT. Reven Global Airtransport with flight number PK-RVA skidded off the runway at Aminggaru Airport, Ilaga, Puncak Regency, Papua, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at around 09:15 a.m. local time.

The aircraft was carrying six motorcycles weighing approximately 600 kg and 410 kg of mixed food supplies.

As a result of the incident, the aircraft suffered damage to its front tires, which came off, its propeller was bent, and the lower part of the fuselage was broken.

8. Indonesian Navy Bonanza Aircraft (Madura Strait, 2022)

A G-36 Bonanza Indonesian Navy aircraft crashed into the Madura Strait, East Java, on Wednesday morning, September 7, 2022.

The aircraft crashed at around 09:30 a.m. local time in the Surabaya West Shipping Lane (APBS), off the coast between Bangkalan Regency, Madura and Gresik.

The aircraft crashed while conducting the ADEX SIAGA ARMADA II exercise with Indonesian vessels under the Second Fleet Command. The aircraft was flown by Pilot Lieutenant Judistira Eka Permady and Co-pilot Lieutenant Dendy Kresna Bhakti.

9. Indonesian Air Force Golden Eagle Aircraft (Blora, 2022)

An Indonesian Air Force T-50i Golden Eagle fighter jet crashed in Blora, Central Java, on Monday night, July 18, 2022.

The aircraft, belonging to Air Squadron 15, took off from the Indonesian Air Force Base, Iswahjudi, Madiun. The aircraft, piloted by First Lieutenant Allan Safitra Indra Wahyudi, crashed while conducting a Night Tactical Intercept exercise.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Air Force Information Service, the aircraft, with tail number TT-5009, took off from Iswahjudi Air Force Base at 6:24 p.m. local time for a nighttime training.

“At 7:25 p.m., the pilot was still in contact with the flight director, but after that, the aircraft could no longer be contacted,” stated the Air Force Public Relations Department release on Monday, July 18, 2022.

Air Commodore Indan Gilang Buldansyah said that First Lieutenant Allan Safitra Indra Wahyudi died in the fighter jet crash in Nginggil Village, Kradenan, Blora, Central Java.

10. Susi Air plane (Paniai, 2022)

The Susi Air Pilatus Porter PC-6 aircraft with flight number PK-BVM lost contact at around 08:20 a.m. local time. The aircraft was downed while flying from Timika to Duma on Thursday, June 23, 2022.

Six passengers on board the Susi Air plane survived the crash.
