TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has allocated 5,750 scholarships through the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP) for 2026. Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto stated that this initiative aims to bolster the nation’s human resource quality by expanding state-funded access to higher education.
Minister Yuliarto revealed that the 2026 quota includes 1,000 Garuda Scholarships for undergraduate (S1) degrees, 4,000 seats for master's and doctoral programs (S2 and S3), and 750 slots specifically reserved for specialized medical education.
While the official 2026 announcement is pending, the registration and selection schemes are expected to mirror the 2025 cycle. LPDP financing bifurcates into primary educational costs and various supporting funds designed to ensure a student's focus remains entirely on their academic pursuits.
Educational funds cover essential academic expenses such as registration fees, tuition (UKT), book allowances, research costs for theses or dissertations, international seminars, and journal publications. Complementary supporting funds include transportation, visa fees, health insurance, arrival allowances, monthly living stipends, and incentives for international competitions. Furthermore, doctoral candidates are eligible for family allowances and emergency funds if necessary during their studies.
Below are the detailed components of the LPDP scholarship benefits:
Registration Fee
The LPDP scholarship covers all administrative costs associated with enrolling in domestic or international universities. This includes one-time payments for entrance exams, registration, and institutional development fees, with the total amount adjusted to the specific requirements of the chosen university.
Book Allowance
Recipients receive a dedicated book allowance valued at Rp10 million, paid as a lump sum annually. The frequency of these payments depends on the duration of the study program:
- Programs under 18 months: 1 payment
- 18 to 29 months: 2 payments
- 30 to 41 months: 3 payments
- 42 to 53 months: 4 payments
- 54 to 65 months: 5 payments
- Over 65 months: 6 payments
Thesis/Dissertation Research Assistance Fund
Research assistance is provided either upfront or on an "at-cost" basis. Based on previous standards, the funding levels are as follows:
Domestic: Rp15 million–Rp25 million for a Master's thesis and Rp60 million–Rp75 million for a Doctoral dissertation (with higher amounts allocated for laboratory-based research).
International: Rp30 million–Rp50 million for a Master's thesis and Rp120 million–Rp150 million for a Doctoral dissertation.
Note: Unused funds must be returned, while recipients may request additional support if initial disbursements prove insufficient.
International Journal Publication Fund
To encourage academic contribution, LPDP funds publication in reputable journals. Master’s students receive one grant, while doctoral candidates may receive two. The funding is set at Rp25 million for Q1-ranked journals and Rp15 million for Q2-ranked journals.
Transportation and Monthly Living Expenses
LPDP provides airfare from the recipient's home to their university at the start and end of the study period. For daily life, a monthly stipend is provided based on the local cost of living. Domestic recipients typically receive between Rp4 million and Rp5 million, while those studying abroad can receive approximately USD1,400 per month.
Family and Emergency Allowances
A family allowance is exclusively available to doctoral and medical specialty students whose spouse or children relocate with them. This covers up to two family members, with each receiving 25% of the recipient's monthly stipend. Additionally, students are provided with health insurance and can apply for emergency funds or competition fees as needed.
