TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s railway company, PT KAI, said the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit, or LRT Jabodebek, logs a significant surge in passengers during this year’s Christmas holiday.
On December 25 and 26, LRT Jabodebek served 92,250 passengers, up 46.9 percent compared to 2023, at 62,782 passengers.
Executive VP of LRT Jabodebek Mochamad Purnomosidi said that during the eight-day Christmas and New Year holiday season from December 19 to 26, LRT Jabodebek has served a total of 510,991 passengers, an increase of 85.28 percent compared to the same period the previous year at 275,791 people.
“In an effort to meet user needs, we have increased the number of trips during this season. KAI operated 540 LRT Jabodebek trips during the Christmas holiday, up 35 percent compared to 2023, which operated 400 trips,” he said in an official statement on Friday, December 27.
For the year-end holiday, LRT Jabodebek operated a total of 5,598 trips, an increase of 41.36 percent compared to the same period the previous year of 3,960 trips.
Furthermore, to support resident’s mobility on New Year's Eve, KAI added 36 LRT Jabodebek trips and extended LRT Jabodebek operating hours on December 31, 2024, until midnight.
In total, there are 384 LRT Jabodebek trips prepared to support people’s mobility.
Purnomosidi urged people to use public transportation such as LRT Jabodebek during the New Year's Eve celebrations. “By using public transportation, we can reduce congestion and air pollution as well as enjoy more comfortable and efficient travel at the same time,” he said.
Although the operating hours have been extended, Purnomosidi ensured that the fares will remain normal at Rp10,000 during off-peak hours and Rp20,000 during peak hours. Peak hours are from 06:00 to 08:59 and 16:00 to 19:59. Outside of these times, off-peak fares apply.
"As the public's enthusiasm to celebrate the New Year has the potential to cause congestion, we hope that the public can use public transportation such as the LRT Jabodebek so that their journey is more comfortable, safe, and smooth," Purnomosidi said in a written statement on Thursday, December 26.
