M4.4 Sea Earthquake Shakes Bantul, Two Aftershocks Monitored

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake rocked the Bantul area, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and its surroundings on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 09:52:08 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has parameters with a magnitude of M4.4. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.28° LS and 110.27° BT or precisely at sea at a distance of 43 kilometers southwest of Bantul with a depth of 20 kilometers.

"By considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to fault activity in the sea," said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono in his statement, Sunday.

The tremors of this earthquake were felt in the areas of Kulon Progo, Sleman, Kota, Bantul, Gunungkidul, Pacitan, Trenggalek, Tulungagung II-III MMI, namely the vibrations felt like a truck passing by. Until now there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake.

Until Sunday at 10:06 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed two aftershocks.
