TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake shaking the Talaud Islands region, North Sulawesi, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 23:09:12 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The BMKG analysis results show that this earthquake has been updated with a magnitude of M5.2. The earthquake's epicenter is located at coordinates 4.80 N and 126.35 E or precisely located in the sea 81 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
"Considering the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake due to the activity of the active underwater fault. The source mechanism analysis results show that the earthquake has a strike-slip movement mechanism," said Daryono, Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, in his statement on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Based on the shakemap estimation map, this earthquake caused tremors in the Sangihe Islands Regency area with an intensity scale of IV MMI, which was felt by many people indoors during the day. In the Talaud Islands Regency, it was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI, where vibrations were clearly felt indoors, as if a truck was passing by.
The modeling results indicate that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami. Until 23:35 WIB, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock earthquake activity.
The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors. "In order to avoid buildings cracking or collapsing due to the earthquake," said Daryono.
