TEMPO.CO, JakartaA magnitude 5 earthquake jolted Sarmi in northern Papua on Monday, January 13, 2024, at 10:10 a.m., as reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The agency said that the earthquake originated from land, 87 kilometers southeast of Sarmi.

“With a 21-kilometer depth,” said the director of the earthquake and tsunami of BMKG, Daryono, in a written statement.

Daryono explained that the tremor was considered a shallow earthquake, triggered by the Mamberamo thrust fault.

Based on the estimated shaking map, this earthquake shook the Sarmi district near the shoreline with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, meaning that people inside residential buildings and houses can feel the tremor.

No reports of damages caused by the earthquake thus far.

Daryono also confirmed that the M5 earthquake resulted in no tsunami risks. "Until 10:21 a.m., BMKG monitoring did not show any aftershock activity,” he said.

BMKG urged residents to avoid damaged buildings and actively check information on official BMKG channels that have been verified.
