TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death of Hamas leader Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, last week should be seen as an opportunity to "start a new negotiation phase to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza," said French President Emmanuel Macron in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, October 21, 2024, according to an official statement.
Macron emphasized that Sinwar's death "should be an opportunity to start a new negotiation towards a ceasefire in Gaza," the statement added.
Macron, whose government has been increasingly tense in public discussions with Israel in recent weeks, also reiterated his previous calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza and condemnation of Israeli army actions against UN forces in Lebanon.
Macron urged Netanyahu to protect civilian infrastructure in Lebanon and prioritize the safety of civilians while seeking a ceasefire. He also condemned Israel's attack on UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, which injured several peacekeepers in recent weeks.
Macron also expressed solidarity with Netanyahu after an unmanned aerial vehicle or drone was launched towards the prime minister's residence, the French presidency office said.
Since 23 September, Israel has carried out large-scale air strikes in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah positions, marking an escalation after a year of cross-border conflict with the Lebanese group amid ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza.
Lebanon's health authorities reported nearly 2,500 people killed and over 11,500 injured due to Israel's attacks since last year. On 1 October, Israel expanded the conflict by launching a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.
Israel continues its brutal attacks in Gaza following cross-border attacks by Hamas last year, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Local health authorities reported more than 42,600 people killed, mostly women and children, with nearly 100,000 others injured.
Israeli military operations have forced almost the entire population of Gaza to flee, exacerbated by the ongoing blockade, causing food, clean water, and medicine shortages.
Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice regarding its actions in Gaza.
