TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, on Monday, November 4, 2024, said that his country has prepared a draft resolution for the UN General Assembly. The resolution will propose for Israel to be expelled as a member of the world body "if there are violations of law, regulations, and decisions in issues involving Palestine," reported Anadolu Agency.
Anwar told parliament members that the draft resolution is in the negotiation process and is expected to be submitted to the General Assembly of the UN for approval "soon."
"Firm actions, including the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations (UN) following human rights violations and genocidal crimes committed by Israel, must be enforced as soon as possible," said Anwar.
"Malaysia will ensure that this agenda is heard and taken seriously so that the atrocities of the Israeli regime can be stopped, besides enabling crucial assistance to reach the people of Palestine as the massacres continue to deteriorate," he said, according to a brief excerpt of his speech shared in X.
This comes after the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, called for the suspension of Israel's membership in the UN on Wednesday, citing repeated violations of international law and the occupation of Palestinian territories.
Once approved, Anwar said, the resolution is expected to serve as a legal basis for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue providing essential services, including education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid.
The Israeli parliament last week passed a law banning UNRWA from operating, which will ultimately affect its work in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The law will take effect in 90 days.
