TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An activist in support of Palestine was arrested by the British police on Sunday, March 9, 202. The man, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested after climbing the giant clock in the city of London, the Big Ben located in the complex of the British Parliament. He was at the Elizabeth Tower for 16 hours to raise the Palestinian flag on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
During the act, he shouted the words "Free Palestine." The act took place from Saturday morning until late at night. This dramatic action resulted in the closure of the Westminster Bridge and the cancellation of tours in the parliament building.
"We deployed a specialist team and worked with the London Fire Brigade to resolve the situation with minimal risk," said a Metropolitan Police spokesman as quoted from Reuters.
The police had tough negotiations with the man. According to Sky News, the man had insisted on coming down in his own way. However, he eventually surrendered.
The Metropolitan Police received the first report of the incident at the Elizabeth Tower at 07:24 local time. After he was arrested, all previously closed roads were reopened to the public.
This act adds to the long list of pro-Palestine demonstrations that are becoming more creative and daring to attract international attention to the humanitarian issues in the conflict area.
