TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) Maruarar Sirait said that he received positive responses from the House of Representatives and the Corruption Eradication Commission after initiating a competition to capture corruptor Harun Masiku. He believes it is time for the public to be involved in the search for the bribery case suspect.
"I received WhatsApp and SMS messages from some fellow members of the House of Representatives, and I saw that they were positive. From the KPK, it was positive too. So, this is public participation," said Maruarar Sirait when met at the Rusun Lokbin Rawa Buaya, West Jakarta on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
Previously, Ara was known for organizing a competition to find the fugitive in a corruption case, Harun Masiku. In a video circulating on social media, he stated that he would provide Rp 8 billion from his own pocket to anyone who could capture Harun Masiku.
"I will give a bonus to anyone who can catch Harun Masiku, Rp 8 billion from my personal funds. Yes, to boost morale, so that there will no longer be impunity," said Maruarar in the video, as quoted by Antara.
When asked separately, he defended his decision to use personal funds in the competition. "What's wrong with me giving that (Rp 8 billion). Public participation, that's personal money," he said when meeting journalists at Manggarai Station, South Jakarta after visiting the assets of Perumnas and PT KAI on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
According to Ara, the country should not lose to corruptors. He believes that there should not be a single person immune to the law in Indonesia. "It's been a long time without any progress, so I took personal initiative, right," he said.
The Gerindra politician stated that he will not accept Indonesia losing to Harun Masiku. He is convinced that there are significant issues involved by the corruption suspect, which involve prominent figures.
"Perhaps it is time for the people to get involved; be vigilant and attentive. From the blessings that God has given me, I do not want this country to lose to the corruptor named Harun Masiku," he said.
For information, Harun Masiku is a suspect in a bribery case involving civil servants for the designation of elected members of the House of Representatives for 2019-2024 at the General Election Commission (KPU). He has been a fugitive or on the Wanted Person List by the KPK since January 17, 2020.
Harun is a suspect in the bribery case involving KPU Commissioner 2017-2022 Wahyu Setiawan (W). This bribery is suspected to enable Harun to become a member of the House of Representatives from the PDIP faction, replacing Nazarudin Kiemas who passed away in March 2019. However, Harun Masiku has always evaded the KPK investigators' summons and has been placed on the Wanted Person List.
Response from KPK
Ara's initiative to organize the competition to capture Harun Masiku has garnered a response from the KPK. KPK Deputy Chairman Johanis Tanak appreciated the competition, and regarded Ara's action as exemplary and deserving of recognition.
"He should be honored by the state, because out of around 281.6 million people in Indonesia, he is the only one willing to sacrifice his wealth so that runaway criminals involved in corruption can be captured and processed according to the law," he said on November 28, as quoted by Antara.
In line with this, another KPK Deputy Chairman, Alexander Marwata, appreciated the important role of society in anti-corruption efforts. "The KPK is still looking for HM until now, but hasn't been successful yet. If there are people willing to help, that's good," said Alex on November 29, 2024.
