TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel Ebenezer, or Noel, says there have been at least 80,000 cases of layoffs since the beginning of the year until December 2024. He considers the situation as macabre.
“The data comes at over 80 thousand layoffs,” said Noel on Monday, December 23. Noel believes layoffs should be the last step taken by corporations as it may harm workers. Noel hopes companies will avoid firing employees.
“Layoff, in our opinion, is a terrible step to take. Let there be no such thing as a layoff,” said Noel.
According to the deputy minister, mass layoffs are indeed a phenomenon that is happening all over the world, with digitalization being one of the contributing factors.
The ministry, he said, has prepared several schemes to mitigate the adverse impacts that may occur due to the mass layoff. “Because we don't want layoffs to become a waking nightmare for our fellow workers. Answering this problem is the duty of the state,” said Noel.
Based on ministry data, there are a total of 67,870 workers who suffered from layoffs from January to November 2024, with Jakarta logging the highest number at 14,501 people. The rank is followed by Central Java with 13,012 people laid off and Banten with 10,727 people laid off.
