TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amid all the mass protest that is happening in Indonesia right now, the University of Indonesia (UI) has decided to move all academic and non-academic activities online from Monday, September 1 to Thursday, September 4, 2025. The decision was made following the current political situation in Indonesia, which is considered potentially disruptive to the safety, comfort, and smooth running of campus activities.

In a circular signed by UI Rector Heri Hermansyah, it was stated that lectures during this period would be conducted online. "Practical activities, laboratory usage, and other activities that cannot be conducted online will be rescheduled, taking into account the principles of safety and security," wrote the circular received by Tempo on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

In addition to lectures, non-academic activities will also be carried out with a work-from-home scheme. UI has set a 50:50 work pattern for employees, with schedules arranged through the approval mechanism of the unit's superiors.

Meanwhile, several critical functions will continue to operate from the campus, such as security personnel, cleanliness, IT network, graduation committee, and other employees deemed essential. University leaders, faculties, and managerial staff will also continue to work from the office with consideration for the safety of travel to the campus.

UI emphasizes that this policy is solely to ensure the safety of the academic community amid a perceived risky situation. "This circular is made to be implemented as it should be," concluded the circular.

Demonstrations in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building have occurred over the past week, on the 25th, 28th, 29th, and 30th of August 2025. Initially, the protesters were protesting the issue of a housing allowance of Rp50 million per month for members of the House. They were also disappointed with the performance of the 580 legislators, whom they felt did not represent the interests of the general public. The actions of the members of the House dancing and responding arrogantly to public criticism also became the culmination of the week-long protests.

The protest went out of hand when a motorcycle taxi rider was fatally hit by a police car which killed the person. The incident, which happened on August 28, angered the crowd and led to mass protests in several areas.
