TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe 5th President of Indonesia and Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, has been invited to serve as an advisor to Scholas Occurrentes, an organization founded by Pope Francis. The Global President of Scholas Occurrentes, José María del Corral, personally asked Megawati during a meeting at the Vatican on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Megawati signaled her willingness to fulfill the request and work together to achieve this mission. "I am honored to be asked to assist Scholas Occurrentes," said Megawati, as quoted from her official statement on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

“This is your home, Madame,” José María replies to Megawati.

The PDIP Chairperson for International Affairs, Ahmad Basarah, explained that Megawati has been asked to serve as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board for Scholas Occurrentes, which will be established in Indonesia. This request was conveyed when José María del Corral visited Megawati’s residence on Jalan Teuku Umar, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on October 2, 2024.

"This request was conveyed directly during the meeting in Jakarta," said Basarah.

Megawati has been asked to provide advice and guidance for the development of Scholas in Indonesia. Pope Francis recently established the Universidad del Sentido or University of Meaning, which is managed by Scholas Occurrentes. The university is offering 100 scholarships for students from Indonesia who wish to join.

"The Advisory Board will consist of national figures from diverse backgrounds, representing various cultural and religious groups in Indonesia," said Basarah.

Basarah also explained that the duties and functions of the Advisory Board are still being arranged. However, in general, they will include activities such as promoting the presence of Scholas in Indonesia, supporting its mission and objectives, and providing advice or recommendations to address various challenges.

"Expanding Scholas' network through program planning and activities that benefit society," he added.

For reference, Scholas Occurrentes is a global educational movement initiated by Pope Francis in 2001 when he served as Archbishop of Buenos Aires. The movement was relaunched globally in 2013 and is headquartered in Rome. The motto of Scholas Occurrentes is "Towards an Education Without Borders."
