TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital, Meutya Hafid, hopes that Microsoft's investment of US$1.7 billion or about Rp27.6 trillion in Indonesia can improve the efficiency of public services and help monitor the digital space. The investment includes the development of artificial intelligence or AI.
"The figure represents the largest investment in the 29-year history of Microsoft's presence in Indonesia," she said during the launch of the AI ElevAIte training program at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Construction (Komdigi), quoted from a written statement on Monday, December 2, 2024.
She mentioned that Microsoft's investment is expected to support the AI training of 1 million digital talents. For example, the ElevAIte Indonesia program helps the community understand how AI works. This program, which has many female participants, is also expected to improve digital security.
According to Meutya, Komdigi has received many messages from the public who want a healthy and productive digital space. "This trust is also an important element in the acceptance of AI," Meutya said.
The ElevAIte program aims to connect Indonesian talent with new opportunities in the AI sector. The program will involve partners from government, industry, educational institutions, and communities.
Citing Microsoft's official news site, ElevAIte Indonesia is expected to be able to meet the needs of AI workers in the job market. Referring to the Work Trend Index report released by Microsoft and LinkedIn in early 2024, 69 percent of executives in Indonesia said they would not hire workers without AI skills. In addition, 76 percent of respondents in the study are inclined to hire candidates with less work experience but who are skilled in using AI.
Microsoft Indonesia's president director, Dharma Simorangkir, said it is increasingly important to equip 70 percent of the productive age population with AI skills. "ElevAIte Indonesia will focus on equipping people with the skills to use AI responsibly," he said in a written statement.
This preparation includes the use of AI tools. The goal is for workers to complete tasks faster and with better quality. AI solutions are also expected to add value and address the most pressing national issues.
