TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Technology company Microsoft is reportedly testing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Windows search feature in a new dev channel for Windows 11 Insider testers.

Quoted from The Verge report, this feature uses semantic indexing technology, which allows users to search for local files in a more relaxed language. To access this feature, users need a PC Copilot Plus device.

Announced in October 2024, this AI search feature can be used in the search box in the Settings menu, File Explorer, or taskbar. Interestingly, this feature does not require an internet connection to work because it utilizes the NPU chip embedded in the Copilot Plus device. Currently, AI-based search only supports Windows settings and files in JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS formats.

According to Microsoft, searches can only be performed on files in locations that have been indexed by the user. The location can be adjusted via the Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows menu. Users can also activate the "Enhanced" option to index their entire computer. In the future, this feature will be expanded to support cloud data such as files stored on OneDrive.

The AI-based Windows search will be rolled out gradually to Windows Insider users on Snapdragon-based Copilot Plus PCs. Microsoft also announced that support for Copilot Plus devices with Intel and AMD processors will be available soon. Currently, the feature only supports Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

In addition to AI-based search, Microsoft is also introducing a new feature called Click to Do. This feature allows users to select a context menu by pressing the Windows key while left-clicking the screen. One of the latest updates is the “Refine” option in the Rewrite menu, which can be used to automatically correct grammar.
