TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to a viral video showing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan leaving the room while President Prabowo Subianto was delivering a speech at the 11th D-8 Summit in Egypt.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Roy Soemirat, clarified that each delegation at an international forum has the autonomy to determine the presence of their leader in the meeting room.
“It is customary for delegation leaders to participate in various meetings and bilateral discussions concurrently during international forums," Roy stated in a written statement on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
The viral video showed Prabowo presenting his views at the D-8 Summit, but a number of delegates were seen walking out of the room. Erdogan was one of the figures highlighted by the camera.
Roy emphasized that the Indonesian delegation could not comment on the decisions of other delegations, including the Turkish delegation, which could not attend the forum until the end while Prabowo was delivering his speech.
“We can confirm that President Prabowo had the opportunity to engage in brief meetings with all other delegation heads both before and after the summit, including the President of Turkiye,” Roy stated.
He further emphasized that the meeting between the Indonesian and Turkish delegations throughout the D-8 Summit was conducted in a cordial and friendly manner. “Particularly with the President of Turkiye, it can be said that the two leaders had a cordial meeting during the luncheon held after the end of the D-8 Summit,” Roy concluded.
