TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in the southeastern region of Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted twice on Friday night, August 22, 2025. The initial eruption occurred at 18:24 local time, spewing volcanic ash up to one kilometer above the crater.

An officer at the Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Emanuel Rofinus Bere, stated that the gray volcanic ash was carried southwest and west by the wind. "The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and lasted for about one minute and 55 seconds," Rofinus reported shortly after the incident.

Approximately an hour later, the volcano erupted again at 19:49 local time. This second eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and persisted for approximately three minutes and 41 seconds.

The 1,584-meter-high volcano remains at Alert, or Level IV status. The Geological Agency has recommended that residents and tourists refrain from all activities within a six-kilometer radius and a seven-kilometer radius in the southwest-northeast sector from the eruption's center.

"Residents around Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki should be wary of the potential for rain-induced lahars in rivers originating from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki if there is high-intensity rainfall, especially in the areas of Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, and Nawakote," Rofinus said.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is a stratovolcano, a type of volcano characterized by various eruption styles, including explosive events that produce pyroclastic falls. Since January 2025, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has erupted 471 times.
