TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe hiking routes of Mount Semeru are once again closed for climbers due to the January extreme weather, despite being reopened as recently as December 23, 2024. The hiking trail will be closed temporarily from January 2 to 16, 2025.

The temporary closure was announced through Announcement Letter Number: PG.12/T.8/TU/KSA.5.1/B/12/2024 dated December 31, 2024, signed by TNBTS (The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park) Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha.

The Public Relations Officer of the TNBTS Center Endrip Wahyutama said the closure was based on extreme weather warnings released by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), as well as direct inspection along the hiking trail.

“We finally came to the decision that the last hiking activity allowed was on December 31, 2024, and the last descent on January 1, 2025,” Endrip told Tempo on Thursday.

Ensuring the safety of climbers

According to Endrip, Mount Semeru is temporarily closed to ensure the safety and comfort of climbers and prevent unfortunate incidents.

The hiking routes of Mount Semeru were previously reopened on December 23 last year, after a five-year closure. The reopening, however, was not without restrictions. Climbers were limited to 200 people, and the route stopped at Ranu Kumbolo, the largest and most beautiful lake in the area.

From December 23 to 31, there were 386 people climbing the mountain, all of whom were Indonesian.

In detail, the number of climbers on December 26 was 6 people; December 27, 35 people; December 28, 75 people; December 29, 68 people; December 30, 93 people; and December 31, 109 people.

No data recorded for December 24 and 25, as the registration to climb Mount Semeru is limited to three days before the start of the hike. Endrip said the rule was imposed to ensure climbers have enough preparation time before leaving for the hike.

“We urge all prospective visitors to comply with this temporary closure policy and not engage in illegal climbing activities,” said Endrip.

Prospective climbers are also asked to wait for further information regarding the reopening of Mount Semeru, as it’s a common practice to temporarily close and reopen the hiking routes.

Mount Semeru was shut down for climbers for 5 years, starting in September 2019 due to forest fires. It was then closed for the COVID-19 pandemic, another forest fire in September 2023, and the reuptions on December 4, 2021, and December 4, 2022.
