TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Eddy Soeparno, said that there needs to be law enforcement against police officers who are suspected of being involved in the extortion of Malaysian Foreign Nationals (WNA) at the largest EDM music festival in Southeast Asia, Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP).

"So there is a case of discipline that needs to be enforced," Edy told reporters at the DPR complex, South Jakarta, on Monday, December 23, 2024.

The National Mandate Party or PAN politician regretted the extortion carried out by law enforcement officers who should have provided order to the community. "It turns out that they actually violated the law," he said.

Eddy said he believed that the police leadership could follow up on the personnel involved in the violation. Because, according to him, the incident had a bad influence on the face of the police who were repairing their image in society

"The image is already good in society, although recently there have been many incidents that are considered to have tarnished the face of the police," said Eddy.

Allegations of police extortion of Malaysian citizens emerged after a number of foreign citizens from Malaysia claimed to have been victims of arrests by the police during DWP 2024. A social media account, @squi***, said they saw many visitors being arrested even though no prohibited items were found.

"While I was enjoying the event, suddenly the police came and started arresting people around me," the account said. The account also said that visitors who tested negative for drugs were still forced to pay money.

The DWP organizers apologized for the incident. "Your safety, well-being and experience are - and will always be - our top priority," said the official statement from DWP in an Instagram post on Thursday, December 19, 2024. The concert organizer, Ismaya Live, also stated that they are working with the authorities to investigate the alleged extortion case.

According to reports circulating, around 400 Malaysians claimed to have been victims of extortion with a total value of RM 9 million or around Rp32 billion.

DWP 2024 will be held for three days, December 13-15, 2024, at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The EDM music festival, which has been running since 2008, is usually attended by thousands of visitors from within and outside the country. This year, DWP features a lineup of top musicians such as Steve Aoki, Timmy Trumpet, Armin Van Buuren, and Zedd.
