TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammadiyah, one of the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, has announced that Eid al-Fitr or 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri will fall on Monday, March 31, 2025. This determination is based on the hisab hakiki wujudul hilal method, a long-standing guideline used by the Muhammadiyah Leadership's Tarjih and Tajdid Council to calculate the beginning of the Hijri month.
The start of the month is determined by observing the hilal, or crescent moon, which requires the ijtimak (conjunction) to occur before sunset, the moon to set after the sun, and the moon's upper disk to be above the horizon at sunset. If any of these criteria are not met, the month is extended to 30 days.
The ijtimak process, when the earth, moon, and sun align in longitude, occurred on March 29, 2025, at 17:59 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). However, at sunset in Yogyakarta, the moon's height did not meet the required criteria, indicating the hilal was not visible.
Similarly, across Indonesia, the moon remained below the horizon, failing to meet the crescent moon criteria. Therefore, the month of Ramadan 1446 Hijri is completed with 30 days, resulting in Eid al-Fitr falling on Monday, March 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has predicted that this year's Eid al-Fitr will also fall on March 31, 2025.
"So, our Eid is predicted to be March 31, 2025," he said during a press conference for the 2025 Ketupat Operation at the National Police College of Technology in Jakarta on Monday, March 10, 2025.
He indicated that Muslims will likely observe 30 days of fasting this year. Nasaruddin also suggested that this prediction aligns with the possibility of a simultaneous Eid al-Fitr celebration with other Islamic organizations, such as Muhammadiyah.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs is holding an isbat session this afternoon, March 29, 2025, to officially determine 1 Shawwal 1446 Hijri. The session is being held at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Central Jakarta.
The session includes a national seminar on hisab rukyat (astronomical calculation and moon sighting), a report on the rukyat results, the isbat session, and a press conference by Minister Nasaruddin Umar. The session is also being broadcast live on the Bimas Islam TV YouTube channel.
