MUI Urges Thorough Study on Prabowo's Gaza Evacuation Plan

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAmirsyah Tambunan, the secretary-general of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), said he understood Prabowo’s proposal to evacuate Gaza residents but underscored the importance of a thorough study before implementing it.

"Comprehensive and in-depth studies are required so that Indonesia is truly prepared," he said after a humanitarian meeting for Palestine at the MUI office in Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025.

He mentioned that the head of state's proposal to evacuate thousands of children, women, and orphans from Gaza was floated ever since the president's tenure as Indonesia’s Minister of Defense. However, the idea is currently facing pushback while also generating support among Indonesian people.

"Because the plan coincides with President Donald Trump’s relocation idea,” he said.

Amirsyah emphasized that MUI rejects the U.S. plan for Gaza, deeming the move an international wrongdoing and something more cruel than ethnic cleansing.

Amirsyah expressed concern that Prabowo's proposal, which was likened to Trump’s idea, would create a division among Indonesian society in its support for Palestine. He urged the Indonesian people to remain united in supporting and defending Palestine.

MUI, he affirmed, is ready to help seek the best way to support Palestine, both regarding humanitarian aid and Palestinians’ struggle for independence. "We hope that there will be a strong synergy between the government and the people (of Indonesia) to defend Palestine," he added.

Previously, Prabowo proposed to bring 1,000 Gaza residents to Indonesia for temporary treatment. The president embarked on a Middle East tour to seek support for his plan, claiming that the proposal will only be put into place if the aforementioned countries back the plan. The countries include the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.

Prabowo mentioned that the evacuation would only be temporary, until the Gaza residents have recovered. "They will only stay here temporarily until they have recovered, and when Gaza conditions allow, they must return to their homeland. I believe that is the Indonesian government's stance," said Prabowo during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, before departing to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in the early hours of Wednesday, April 9.

Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the plan to evacuate a thousand Gaza residents to the country would be conducted without coercion. He also mentioned that the government is ready to evacuate Gaza residents if requested.

However, he emphasized that the plan required approval from Palestine and other parties. "Everyone has to agree with the proposal,” he said on Friday, adding that the intention was not permanent relocation of the people of Gaza.
