TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim conducted a handover of duties to three new ministers working in the fields of education, culture, as well as science and technology at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology office on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Central Jakarta, on Monday, October 21, 2024.
The three new ministers are Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, and Minister of Culture Fadli Zon. They arrived at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology office at 12:20 local time after being inaugurated by President Prabowo at the State Palace on Monday morning.
In his speech, Nadiem Makarim expressed his honor for being entrusted by Joko Widodo to lead the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the past five years.
"On the other hand, this is also a touching moment as it is time to say goodbye and hand over this great responsibility to the new leaders," he said.
He believes that with the selection of the three new ministers, the sectors of education, culture, science, and technology will further develop.
During his tenure as minister, Nadiem introduced a new curriculum which is now implemented for elementary to high school students, called the Merdeka Curriculum. Previously, Nadiem entrusted that the program continued by the ministers in the Red and White Cabinet.
"Congratulations from me and I hope the continuation of 'Merdeka Belajar' (Freedom to Learn), and I wish success to the next ministers," he said when visiting the Presidential Palace in Jakarta last Friday, to bid farewell to President Jokowi before retiring.
The Merdeka Curriculum is an initiative of the Ministry of Education of Indonesia that gives freedom to students and teachers in the teaching and learning process.
The goal is to create a flexible and relevant educational environment, with adjustable curricula, learning options according to interests, and collaboration between schools and the community.
This program aims to improve the quality of education and prepare graduates for real-world challenges.
