TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli newspaper Maariv, as quoted by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, reported that prosecutors had approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to cancel his testimony in the corruption trial against him, citing ''security developments."
According to Maariv, Netanyahu has requested his testimony in the trial on Tuesday to be canceled, just hours after the Israeli prime minister oversaw the latest genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, has appeared before the court since Monday in one of three long-delayed cases that he has described as a ''political witch hunt.''
The Israeli PM justified ordering the attack on Gaza, the largest violation since the ceasefire on January 19, as Hamas refused to extend the first-stage ceasefire to release all hostages.
However, according to the initial agreement, the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza would be carried out in stage two, on the condition that Israel withdraw its forces from Gaza.
Israeli political analyst Ori Goldberg told Al Jazeera that the atmosphere has changed and few in Israel believe Netanyahu's claim that the resumption of attacks in Gaza would help free the hostages.
He said the national police and the Shin Bet security service opened an investigation into Netanyahu's behavior and senior staff at the prime minister's office.
Israelis' protests have also reignited against the backdrop of this new investigation and because of the testimony of returnee hostages that ''Israeli hostages are genuinely physically at risk'' in Gaza.
Goldberg mentioned that very few Israelis believe Netanyahu's claim that the new bombing will ultimately achieve the goal of the war and bring about the release of the hostages.
The bombing that began early Tuesday has killed at least 308 Palestinian civilians in Gaza and injured hundreds more, including women, children, and the elderly.
The attack also threatens the lives of victims trapped in the wreckage of buildings that were hit by the Israeli strike.
