Smoke and flames rise in Beirut's southern suburbs, after Israeli air strikes, amid ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, as seen from Sin El Fil, Lebanon, October 6, 2024. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel attacked southern Beirut, claimed to be a weapons warehouse of Hezbollah on Saturday, October 19, 2024. The strike was Israel's retaliation after an unmanned aerial vehicle or drone targeted the vacation home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu was not at home during the attack. It is also unclear the extent of damage caused by the drone attack. Netanyahu described the incident as an assassination attempt by a group supported by Iran, Hezbollah. He called the attack a major mistake.

Lebanon's official national news agency reported two Israeli strikes on the same building in Haret Hreik neighborhood. "Israeli fighter jets have attacked the al-Umara neighborhood near Choueifat," the news agency wrote.

Israel's military spokesperson Avichay Adraee warned residents in the southern outskirts (Dahiyeh), especially those in the Haret Hreik neighborhood to stay away. "You are near facilities and interests belonging to Hezbollah, which will be the target of IDF (Israel's military) operations in the near future," he wrote in Arabic on X. He also issued warnings for the Burj al-Barajneh and Choueifat neighborhoods.

Israel Also Bombs Gaza

Aside from Lebanon, attacks also took place in Gaza. Medics and media reported that the attacks killed more than 100 people across Gaza as Israel surrounded a hospital.

Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah are determined to continue their attacks. Ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon still remain distant hopes.

Israel's military or IDF is examining casualty reports from an airstrike in northern Gaza, said an Israeli official. IDF added that preliminary checks indicate the numbers have been exaggerated and do not match the information they have received.

In the southern outskirts of Beirut, Israel launched a massive strike at several locations, leaving thick plumes of smoke hanging over the city until night. "The attack targeted several Hezbollah weapon storage facilities and the Hizbullah intelligence headquarters," said the Israeli military.

Israel issued evacuation orders in four locations on the outskirts of Gaza and urged residents to stay at least 500 meters away. However, Israel continued its attacks.
