TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The newly-inaugurated Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, has indicated that he will review the Merdeka Curriculum, which was introduced during Nadiem Makarim's tenure.
“We must also review this curriculum, as it is still relatively new,” Mu'ti told reporters following a handover ceremony at the Ministry of Education and Culture in Jakarta on Monday, October 21.
He noted that despite being established as the national curriculum, not all educational institutions have been able to fully implement it. Furthermore, he acknowledged that the curriculum remains a subject of debate.
“So, let's see. We won’t rush into policy decisions,” he stated, adding that he would consider input from within the ministry, the public, and educational experts as he reviews the Merdeka Curriculum.
The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum has garnered both praise and criticism, with one notable point of contention being the elimination of majors in high schools.
As reported in Tempo on July 23, 2024, some educational observers expressed concerns about the removal of majors. “The elimination of majors is feared to lead to high school students selecting only the easiest subject packages,” warned educational observer Darmaningtyas.
Additionally, Cecep Darmawan, an educational observer from the University of Indonesia, suggested that the removal of majors in high schools could have positive implications, as it has been implemented in other countries.
However, he emphasized that success in those countries is supported by adequate facilities. “The question is whether the Merdeka Curriculum is backed by sufficient facilities, such as laboratory equipment for students during practical classes,” he queried.
