No Tsunami Threat to Indonesia After Japan's Miyazaki Earthquake: BMKG

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Miyazaki, Japan, on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 19:19:36 Jakarta time. (BMKG)

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Miyazaki, Japan, at 19:19:36 Jakarta time on Monday, January 13, 2025.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 31.78°N and 131.54°E, approximately 309 kilometers southwest of Hiroshima, Japan, with a hypocenter depth of 40 kilometers.

“The Miyazaki earthquake is a shallow earthquake resulting from Nankai subduction activity, characterized by a thrust fault mechanism,” said Daryono, BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, on Monday.

BMKG analysis has determined that this earthquake poses no tsunami threat to the Indonesian region. Therefore, coastal communities throughout Indonesia are advised to remain calm.
