TEMPO.CO, Medan - A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck North Tapanuli Regency in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Province at around 05:22 WIB this morning, March 18, 2025. As of noon, aid has not yet reached Pahae Jae and Pahae Julu, two districts affected by the disaster.

Bonggas Pasaribu, head of the North Tapanuli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), reported that the earthquake triggered landslides that severed the Sumatra crossroad in Silangkitang and Sarulla villages, collapsing sections of the road. Several public facilities, including schools and places of worship, sustained damage.

In Pahae Jae District, the quake damaged the office of the Pardomuan Nainggolan village head and the Siriaria Bridge in Siopat Bahal Village. "The Tarutung-Sidimpuan road section is completely blocked. Six heavy machines have been deployed to clear the landslide debris," Pasaribu said on Tuesday, March 18.

According to Pasaribu, reports indicate that one elderly woman, Kartini Manalu (70), a resident of Hutabarat Village, Lumban Tongatonga Hamlet in Pahae Julu District, was killed. Her husband, Hulman Hutabarat (67), from the same household, suffered injuries.

"The two victims were a husband and wife living in the same house. They were sleeping when the earthquake struck, causing a nearby mountain cliff to collapse and bury their home," Pasaribu explained.

He added that reports and data about the situation following the disaster continue to be updated.

As of noon today, at least 10 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquake. Pasaribu urged residents to stay away from cliff areas to avoid further casualties due to ground movements.

The Regent of North Tapanuli, Jonius Taripar Hutabarat, has not yet arrived at the earthquake site. Tempo attempted to contact Jonius via phone and WhatsApp to inquire about the delayed food and medical aid but has received no response.
