TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deputy head of the Indonesian National Police's special anti-corruption task force, Novel Baswedan, proposed anti-corruption strategies for the government of President Prabowo Subianto. Novel made the proposal to support the commitment of the 8th President of Indonesia in combating corruption over the next 5 years.
"Fighting corruption is a fundamental foundation in building a clean, transparent and accountable government," Novel said in his statement on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
First, Novel urged Prabowo to strengthen the position of the anti-corruption institution, which has been weakened by the revision of the KPK law in 2019. The weakening of the KPK has demonstrably caused Indonesia's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) to drop from 40 to 34 over the past four years, he said.
"I urge President Prabowo to immediately revise the KPK Law to restore the independence of the KPK in accordance with Law No. 30 of 2002," Novel said.
Second, the former KPK investigator advised Prabowo to review the list of candidates for the KPK's head and supervisory board. He believes that the right leaders will be the key for the KPK to work effectively.
The demand to change the names of the candidates for the KPK Chief and Board of Supervisors comes as the selection process conducted during the Jokowi era was considered to have violated the Constitutional Court Decision Number 112/PUU-XX/2022 regarding the term of office of the KPK Chief.
In its deliberations, the Constitutional Court stated that the selection of the KPK Chair and the members of the KPK Board of Supervisors could only be done once in a parliamentary and presidential term. In the 2019-2024 period, Jokowi had conducted the selection in 2019.
As for the third strategy, Novel urged the Prabowo Subianto government to resolve several unresolved corruption cases from the era of President Joko Widodo.
"The government under President Prabowo is expected to prioritize the resolution of these cases as a form of commitment to fight corruption," Novel said.
Finally, Novel emphasized the need for the Prabowo Subianto administration to establish a national integration system to support anti-corruption efforts. The system consists of a transparent selection of leaders, education on integrity values, and strong law enforcement.
Through these four proposals, Novel Baswedan is optimistic that the Prabowo Subianto administration can lead Indonesia to a cleaner and fairer state. He hopes that Prabowo will fulfill the promises he made in his inauguration speech at the MPR General Assembly on Sunday, October 20, 2024. In his speech, Prabowo said he would not tolerate corruption.
"I have said that we must be bold in confronting and eradicating corruption," Prabowo said at the time.
