TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eko Ernanda, Chairperson of the Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch in Australia and New Zealand, criticized President Prabowo Subianto's plan to evacuate people of Gaza, Palestine, to Indonesia. According to him, the president's discourse has the potential to impact the future struggle of the Palestinians.
"The evacuation of Palestinian children outside this territory will weaken their political and moral position," he said in a humanitarian gathering for Palestine at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) office in Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025.
He assessed that Prabowo's idea was based on his desire to help Gaza's children with their problems. However, he noted that the plan to bring thousands of children and women from Gaza to the country needs to be carefully reviewed.
Instead of evacuation, he said, the government should focus on providing support and aid to Palestine, such as medical personnel, food, and education. "The best support is to ensure they can continue to live, learn, and grow peacefully in their homeland," said Eko.
Meanwhile, Prabowo is seeking approval and support from several countries in the Middle East before realizing his plan to evacuate Gazans. He visited the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan to convey his plan.
Prabowo stated that Indonesia will evacuate thousands of Gazans if it receives approval from several parties actively helping the Palestinians. He said the evacuation will only be temporary until Gazans recover.
Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the plan to evacuate a thousand Gazans to the country will be carried out without coercion. Upon request, the government would be ready to evacuate Gazans.
However, he mentioned that the plan must receive approval from Palestine and several parties.
