TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communications and Digital Meutya Hafid has deactivated eleven employees for alleged involvement in online gambling. The deactivated employees are suspects in online gambling cases.
"We have deactivated 11 verified names among those arrested by the police," Meutya said during a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I at Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Meutya said she did not know the exact identities of the ministry employees, only their initials. The Golkar Party politician claimed that the police had more information.
"We need to verify first, [but] at the moment it is still 11," Meutya said, adding that the number of Ministry of Communication employees who have been deactivated due to alleged involvement in online gambling may increase.
Meutya explained that they can only deactivate these employees. Employees involved in online gambling will be dismissed once the case is finalized. "The dismissal will only be done if the legal process is final and the dismissal will be done dishonorably."
Last Friday, the head of the National Police Public Relations Bureau, Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, announced that his agency had named eleven employees of the Ministry of Communications as suspects in online gambling cases. These ministry employees are suspected of abusing their authority by accepting rewards for not blocking online gambling sites. "The employees of the Ministry of [Communications and Digital Affairs] received something for not carrying out their duties and functions," Trunoyudo said.
