TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Industry Ministry has revealed that over 12,000 units of iPhone 16 have entered Indonesia despite the lack of official sales in the domestic market. “As of November, the number exceeds 12,000,” confirmed Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, Spokesperson for the Industry Ministry, on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Febri said these figures were derived from International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) data recorded in the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), maintained by the ministry.
According to him, there are four primary entry routes for Apple's latest smartphone into Indonesia. The first route is through the official issuance of IMEI by the Ministry of Industry. The second route is through personal luggage in which passengers arriving from abroad can bring the gadget into the country by paying applicable customs duties.
The third route is through diplomatic permits in which individuals with diplomatic status may obtain a permit from the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) to import the device. “This is specifically for diplomats,” he said.
The fourth route is through cellular operators, where mobile operators can import a limited number of iPhone 16 units within a specified period.
Febri acknowledged that the most common entry route for the iPhone 16 is currently through customs. However, he said a detailed analysis of the data center system is required to confirm the exact numbers.
Previously, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) of the Finance Ministry, stated that 5,448 units of iPhone 16 had entered Indonesia as of October 2024. Head of the Import Sub-Directorate of DJBC, Chotibul Umam, explained on January 10 that these units arrived through both passenger goods and shipments.
The official sale of the iPhone 16 in Indonesia remains prohibited. Apple Inc. has yet to fulfill the requirements mandated by the Indonesian government, including Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita earlier clarified that the planned construction of an Apple factory in Batam, Riau Islands, will not immediately impact the iPhone 16 sales permit. This is because the factory will primarily produce electronic accessories such as AirTags, rather than HKT products (handsets, computers, and tablets).
