TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following his official introduction as the new head coach of the Indonesian National Team, Patrick Kluivert met with five Garuda squad players: Egy Maulana Vikry, Witan Sulaeman, Rizky Ridho, Muhammad Ferrari, and Ricky Kambuaya. The meeting took place on Sunday evening, January 12, 2025.
Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) General Chair, Erick Thohir, revealed the meeting on his Instagram account @erickthohir, sharing a video clip of Kluivert and his assistant coach, Denny Landzaat, interacting with the players.
“We discussed the development of Indonesian football, particularly the national team. All the players are enthusiastic and eager to contribute their best for Indonesia,” Erick stated. “We share the same dream: to bring the Garuda to fly high.”
As previously reported, Kluivert had planned to meet with several Indonesian national team players following his appointment. “Tonight I will meet five players here,” he stated at the Mulia Hotel in Senayan on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to the player meeting, Kluivert visited the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, where he greeted Indonesian national team supporters via the @timnasindonesia Instagram account. “Hello Garuda Fans, we are ready for the next round!” he exclaimed, giving a thumbs up.
Kluivert's appointment marks the end of Shin Tae-yong's tenure as the head coach of the Indonesian National Team. The South Korean coach led the team to third place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with six points from six matches.
The 48-year-old Dutch coach acknowledged the talent and potential of the Indonesian players but emphasized the need to further elevate their performance. However, he said he cannot yet fully assess the team's capabilities. He embraces the pressure that comes with the role.
“I am a person who likes to be under pressure. The greater the pressure, the more I enjoy it. I will instill this attitude in the team members and myself as we face several crucial matches ahead,” Kluivert stated.
