TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian national team coach Patrick Kluivert said he would focus on local players without neglecting diaspora players. For him, local players are the heart of the national team.
"I want to focus on local players and check their quality. The importance of local players is not only in terms of talent but local players are the heart and soul of the Indonesian national team," he said at the Mulia Hotel, Senayan, Sunday, January 12, 2025. "If local players are the heart then diaspora players are the hands and feet and that can be a very good unit."
He admitted that he could not speak further about the quality of the Indonesian national team players, especially local players, because he had not trained them. He said it was difficult to say what was lacking and what he needed to fix in the Garuda squad.
"I need to be on the team to be able to say what I can do better or what is already good. So for me it is very difficult to say," he said.
The 48-year-old coach said that of course the Indonesian national team players have talent and abilities so they can be pushed to a higher level. Although, he said, currently he cannot map the capacity of the Indonesian national team players.
"I know that for sure and that's what happens when I work with the players, when we work with the players, they will become better players. I am 100 percent sure about that," said Kluivert.
Kluivert is aware of the pressure felt with the situation of the Indonesian national team which is currently in third place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian zone. There is also pressure from supporters who want their favorite team to qualify for the World Cup. Even so, he emphasized that he likes pressure.
"I am a person who likes to be under pressure, the more pressure the more I like it. I am not afraid of pressure. And I will apply this attitude to the team members and myself as a unit where there are several important matches ahead that we will face as a team," he said.
Patrick Kluivert will work with two assistant coaches from the Netherlands, namely Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat, in carrying out his duties. Shin Tae-yong's replacement coach, he is burdened with a big target, namely to bring the Indonesian national team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
