TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned ferry boat operator PT Pelni said the House of Representatives has approved a budget of Rp4 trillion for the purchase of three new passenger vessels, which are targeted to start operating in mid-2028.
"Alhamdulilah, PT Pelni has received approval from the Indonesian parliament for the purchase of new passenger vessels, so the company has received a total of Rp3 trillion in state capital injections in 2024-2025 for the purchase of three new ships," said PT Pelni's Communication Manager Ditto Pappilanda, quoted from Antara on Friday, October 10, 2025.
These newly acquired three vessels, he continued, will replace three old ships that have been operating in Indonesia, including in East Nusa Tenggara, namely KM Umisini, KM Lawit, and KM Kelimutu. "The average age of these three ships has reached 40 years. Therefore, they will be replaced with new ships,'" he said.
As a result, passengers will soon be able to board the brand new ships. "For Kupang residents, start reminiscing with KM Umisini and Lawit. Take good care of the ships while we are counting down its operational time," he said.
Ditto added that Pelni has 26 passenger ships serving all regions in Indonesia. However, out of the 26 ships, 12 of them have exceeded their technical lifespan. The management, Ditto said, with the government's support, will annually propose state capital injections (PMN) for the purchase of new passenger ships.
"Therefore, the 12 ships that have exceeded their technical lifespan will soon be replaced," he said.
But the number of ships Pelni manage will remain the same. Nevertheless, Pelni is always open for the government to help add more fleets, as it will support the maritime sector in Indonesia.
