TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian region has been free from the influence of tropical cyclone seed 98S which causes extreme or persistent rain (high intensity rain because it occurs continuously). The cyclone seed grew into a tropical cyclone but moved away from its original position southwest of Sumatra as of Friday, December 27, 2024.

Researcher at the Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Erma Yulihastin revealed this when contacted on Friday. She previously also revealed the presence of a new cyclone seed, namely 99S, southwest of Banten as remnants of the decay that had formed again. "Their position is moving away," said Erma.

She also said that the sea surface temperature on the southern coast of West Java, Banten, and southern Sumatra was relatively normal. The results of her monitoring showed that there were no more excessive positive anomalies. "The cyclone is moving towards warmer waters, to the middle of the Indian Ocean," she said on Friday.

In an interview earlier this month, Erma said that the sea that is warming uniformly has played a role in maintaining the tropical storm system near Indonesia. The sea surface temperature anomaly in Indonesian waters, said Erma, is measured at +2.0-2.5 from its normal temperature.

However, the decrease in sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean southwest or south of Indonesia has not been followed in the southeast or precisely in the north of Australia. The anomaly in the form of sea water warming by +3 degrees is still maintained in this area.

Last Friday, Erma revealed monitoring results that showed preconditions for a vortex or new low pressure center there. "The position of the low pressure center is in the south of East Java, Bali, Lombok," said Erma.

Central Java, East Java, Bali Still Urged to Be Alert

According to this research professor in the field of climatology, this condition will trigger or generate new cyclone seeds and will color the next extreme weather until the first decade (first 10 days) of January 2025. Central Java and East Java are asked to be alert for the potential for persistent rain to return.

Likewise Bali and even, he said, Sulawesi due to the strengthening of the westerly winds due to this latest condition.

So if these days the rain is felt to be decreasing, Erma said, it does not mean that the hurricane season has passed. "It is actually being organized at sea, it has not affected the land," he said.

Hurricane Season in Indonesia

Erma stated that she deliberately used the phrase 'hurricane season'. The reason is, the dynamics that have existed since last November where tropical storm systems have formed intensively in the south and north of Indonesia.

In the south, three cyclone seeds can form in a row at once. In the north, Erma highlighted the Borneo Vortex which also does not usually last more than five days. This time the Borneo Vortex can even grow into a tropical cyclone seed. "This is also a record," he said.
