TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 7.4 magnitude tectonic earthquake rocking the Philippine Sea, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, on Friday morning, October 10, 2025, at 08:43 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The analysis indicates an offshore tremor, occurring about 275 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, with a depth of 58 kilometers.
"This earthquake is a shallow type, triggered by subduction activity, and had a thrust fault mechanism," said Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, in an official statement on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Daryono said the earthquake prompted a tsunami alert in several regions, including the Talaud Islands, Bitung City, the southern part of North Minahasa, the southern part of Minahasa, and Supiori.
BMKG urged residents in these regions to avoid beaches and riverbanks. "Local authorities are advised to direct residents to take evacuation measures according to the (tsunami) alert status," Daryono said.
The earthquake's shaking was strongly felt in several regions. In Tahuna, the tremor was recorded at MMI scale IV, felt by many people indoors. Meanwhile, in Manado, people felt the shaking at II MMI, which means the tremor caused light hanging objects to sway.
No aftershock activity was recorded as of 09:14 a.m. WIB. BMKG also reported no damage caused by the main earthquake.
BMKG urged the residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified rumors. Residents are advised to check the condition of their buildings before returning home.
"Ensure that your residential buildings are earthquake-resistant and do not have any damage that could jeopardize structural stability," BMKG stated.
Official information about the earthquake and tsunami warnings can only be accessed through verified BMKG channels, such as the @infoBMKG social media account, the www.bmkg.go.id website, the inatews.bmkg.go.id portal, as well as the InfoBMKG and WRS-BMKG applications on iOS and Android devices.
